Australian Consumer Agency Choice has published a fascinating study that highlights that your fridge may no longer be the biggest power hog in your home. Home entertainment units such as TVs and video games left on continuously can add AU$250.00 per year to your energy bill which is 5 times the cost of running a fridge! By switching the product “off” when not in use could reduce these cost to about $2.50, saving a enough money to buy a new Wii.

Also of interest is the power consumption of the all in one iMac may use less power than a stand alone PC and half the power of a PC and separate monitor combined. As an industrial designer and environmental consultant I thought it would be great to share random thoughts on designs, materials, technologies and ideas I come across which may be of interest to others. Hopefully these will provoke and stimulate designers, manufacturers and consumers to think about how they make a positive change.
